Equitable Governance of Rangeland Resources

  • Our Objective

Institutionalising fair, inclusive, and community-led governance of grazing areas, water, and restoration sites in Naibunga and Ol Donyiro, enabling lasting coexistence between pastoralism and wildlife.

The project was launched on April 12, 2022 and is currently in progress.

Summary

Sustainable rangelands require more than good intentions. They need shared rules, clear decision-making processes, and governance structures that communities trust and actively participate in. This project works to build exactly that in Naibunga and Ol Donyiro, bringing together traditional and formal resource management systems to create a coherent, inclusive framework.  The project establishes representative committees for restoration sites, develops transparent grazing plans and sustainable rules for community and private conservancies, and promotes equitableaccess to water. Working alongside the Coalition for Change Project, it supports the co-design of seasonal grazing and restoration plans, and helps communities develop land management plans for their territories. Wildlife corridors are actively promoted as important land uses, and key habitats are protected.  Communities are also supported to formally register their land as conservancies under Kenya's 2013 Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, giving them legal recognition and stronger standing to steward their resources. By improving how decisions are made and benefits shared, the project reduces pressure on conservation areas and builds the ownership needed for lasting landscape resilience.
