Background & perspectives
As part of the project "Efficient Use of Biomass Potentials for Energy Production", Ecoplan was commissioned to analyze the sustainably available biomass potentials in the Canton of Bern together with stakeholders from administration, research, and industry, to develop a common understanding of today's biomass use, and to create a vision for its future use. Building on this, central conflicts, hurdles, and perverse incentives should be identified and directions for possible measures and incubators proposed.
The results have been documented in a background report and a vision report. The vision report is aimed at administration, politics, and industry and serves as a basis for discussion. It focuses on the essential cornerstones of future biomass use without elaborating on them in detail. The background report serves as a complementary foundational study and summarizes the current state of knowledge on various biomass fractions – particularly woody biomass, farm manure, and other biomasses. It highlights potentials, usage options, consumption developments, as well as framework conditions, challenges, and solution approaches.
