Prof. Dr. Christian Leumann is Professor emeritus of Bioorganic Chemistry at the University of Bern and currently CEO ad interim of Bern University Hospital (Inselspital). He earned his Ph.D. at ETH Zurich and completed postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley, building an international reputation for research in nucleic acid chemistry, biomimetic synthesis, and bioorganic chemistry in general—recognised by the ETH silver medal and multiple invited lectureships.
Leumann’s leadership spans Swiss science policy and academia: he served on the Swiss National Science Foundation’s Research Council, was President of its Division II, and held office as Vice-Rector for Research before becoming Rector of the University of Bern from 2016 to 2024. As co-founder of the biotech company Synthena AG, and Alpha Anomeric he remains committed to translating fundamental discoveries into therapeutic innovation and societal benefit.
