Dr. Sarah-Lan Mathez-Stiefel

Dr. Sarah-Lan Mathez-Stiefel is an ethnobiologist with a PhD in Human Geography.  Presently a Senior Research Scientist at the Centre for Development and Environment of the University of Bern, she has extensive working experience in Latin America and Eastern and Southern Africa, where she led international cooperation programs in the fields of ethnoecology and sustainability science. Her recent work focuses on conceptualizing and promoting scientific engagement with Indigenous and other local communities. She is the Convenor of UNEP’s GEO7 taskforce on Indigenous Knowledge and Local Knowledge, the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Global Diversity Foundation, and Associate Editor of Mountain Research and Development. She was the President of the International Society of Ethnobiology from 2022-2024.
