Efficient use of biomass potential for energy production

HUB BERN | Project AUE-2

Our goal:

Our aim is to support a more efficient use and recycling of regionally produced biomass. This can advance the circular economy and contribute to regional value creation as well as transformation towards a CO2-neutral society.

In a nutshell:

The potential of locally generated biomass like wood, farm waste, biosolids, and food waste for carbon-neutral energy production has been underutilized to date. The same applies to its material use, that is, the recycling of biomass waste into secondary raw materials. For example, scrap wood can be recycled and used in the production of new furniture. It can also be used as an energy source when burned to produce heat. Based on available studies on biomass potential, a feasibility study will be conducted to determine the current situation versus the target situation, as well as to analyze existing obstacles and challenges for the efficient use of local biomass potential. This will provide a foundation for the development of strategies to promote biomass recycling and resource-conserving, efficient energy production.

At present, relevant scientific resources are being compiled and the involvement of various cantonal offices is being organized.
