HUB BERN | Project AUE-2
Our goal:
Our aim is to support a more efficient use and recycling of regionally produced biomass. This can advance the circular economy and contribute to regional value creation as well as transformation towards a CO2-neutral society.
In a nutshell:
The potential of locally generated biomass (organic material) like wood, farm waste, biosolids, and food waste for carbon-neutral energy production has been underutilized to date. The same applies to its material use, that is, the recycling of biomass waste into secondary raw materials. For example, scrap wood can be recycled and used in the production of new furniture. It can also be used as an energy source when burned to produce heat.
A system analysis conducted jointly with stakeholders from various cantonal offices, research organizations, and the private sector led to the development of a common understanding of the current system of biomass utilization. The amount of biomass that can be produced and harvested in the Canton of Bern was surveyed, and a vision for future biomass utilization was developed. Conflicting goals, obstacles, and false incentives were identified, and directions for possible measures were proposed. Now, the planning of specific incubator projects is underway.
