SPRINGS: Restoring local wetland and improving water balance

The arid and semi-arid region around Mount Kenya is a hotspot of water resources conflicts and issues. The SPRINGS incubator project aims to test an approach for reversing the decline of water flows in the Ewaso N’Giro basin by mobilizing resource users to rehabilitate the springs that feed river tributaries. To this end we have mapped and documented over 150 springs in the catchment. Furthermore, we have selected the Gambella Wetland to pilot an ecosystem rehabilitation process engaging all resource users at their respective scales. Expected benefits include improvement of overall water flow, better access to water for riverside communities and downstream conservancies, and policy endorsement of a new approach to inclusive wetland restoration.
